Elko County’s foundation may have been laid by cattle ranching and the railroad, however it is gold mining that is taking Northeastern Nevada into the 21st century. Known since the early 1960s as having the largest gold mining operation in North and South America, we are growing as a major regional hub for mining support and manufacturing, supporting all different types of mining activity throughout the entire Western United States.
Our enduring legacies began in 1827 when fur trapper Peter Skene Ogden of the Hudson Bay Company discovered the Humboldt River. By 1859, ranching was firmly established in the then Nevada Territory, and the Central Pacific brought the railroad in 1868. With it was born the town of Elko, Nevada. In the 1950s, Elko was the birth place of Las Vegas-style gaming and entertainment with the likes of the Tommy Dorsey Band, Bing Crosby, Wayne Newton, the Andrew Sisters, Jimmy Stewart, Dorothy Lamour and Spike Jones entertaining in Elko regularly.
Since gold was first found along the Carlin Trend, Northeastern Nevada has become the 4th largest producer of gold in the world. This is not your great- great grandfather’s gold mining with picks and shovels; this is highly technical state-of-the-art mining of microscopic gold. The largest gold mine producing companies in the world, Barrick Gold Corporation and Newmont Gold Company,
beautiful public facilities we now all have and enjoy, such as our college, schools, parks, museum, airport, convention center, chamber of commerce facilities, senior citizen centers, hospital, sports fields and reservoirs.
