Ruby Lake, 65 miles SE of Elko, is a 17,125-acre marsh and national wild life refuge that is home to hundreds of wetland species. Ruby Lake is extremely remote, making it a perfect get-away for fishing, hunting, wildlife observation, and photography. State-record catches have been made for rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, tiger trout, cutthroat trout, and largemouth bass. Ruby Marsh has strict boating regulations to help maintain the purity of the water as well as the integrity of the wildlife habitat, as per the brochure available at refuge headquarters and area offices of NDOW, BLM, and Chambers of Commerce. HIKING AND HORSEBACK TRAIL RIDING
With miles and miles of trails through the back country, there is hardly a better place for hiking or horseback riding to be found than our area. When hiking in any remote area, for safety, remember to tell a friend where you are going and when you plan to be back, take plenty of food and water and dress appropriately.
The Ruby Mountains are Nevada’s most wet and verdant, mountain range. Just 20 minutes from the town of Elko, Lamoille Canyon Road provides a fertile and green respite from the surrounding area’s sparser desert ecosystem. Hikers can explore more than 100 miles of trails at the end of the 13.5-mile paved road, which winds around the base of the 11,249-foot Ruby Dome. 775-752-3357 or www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/nevada/lamoille-canyon-scenic-byway
